According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions have hired former Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier to its front office as a personnel executive.
Grier, who was fired by the Dolphins midway through last season, served as Miami’s general manager for a full decade from 2016-25. During Grier's tenure, the Dolphins posted five winning seasons, including four straight from 2020-23, and made the playoffs three times.
Grier’s time with the franchise included big hits with Laremy Tunsil, Xavien Howard, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Andrew Van Ginkel. However, the miss on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa looms large, as did the pricey trade for Tyreek Hill that never got Miami over the top.
Prior to his time as general manager, Grier began as a New England Patriots intern in 1994, served as a Patriots scout from 1995-99, as a Dolphins scout from 2000-02 and as the Dolphins' assistant director of college scouting from 2003-07 and as Miami's director of college scouting from 2007-15.
Grier is the second ex-NFL GM in the Lions' front office, along with senior personnel executive John Dorsey, the GM of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013-17 and Cleveland Browns in 2017-19.
The hire also reunites Grier with Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who served as Miami interim head coach in 2015.
