When Jon Scheyer took over as Duke’s basketball coach, there were some immediate and obvious differences between him and predecessor Mike Krzyzewski.
The immediate stylistic differences were that while Coach K recruited for versatility and athleticism, Scheyer puts more of a premium on size, while still prizing versatility. And he also puts more emphasis on defense than Krzyzewski did, at least near the end of his career, when it was harder to play great defense all the time when you had to incorporate young players every year (Scheyer has an easier time there, because he’s also incorporating older players recruited from the portal).
But there are a lot of similarities as well, with a key one being adapting to your talent.
In this video, assistant coach Chris Carrawell explains how Duke built around Cooper Flagg two seasons ago, and then how Scheyer and his staff built around Cameron Boozer this past season.
Duke recruited more shooters to put around Flagg, and played a five-out offense, while Boozer’s inside power meant that Duke often worked from the inside out.
