Denny Hamlin has been one of the best drivers on superspeedways throughout his career. In addition to winning three Daytona 500s, he’s won twice at Talladega. In six races with the Gen 7 car at the 2.66-mile Alabama track, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has had a couple of top fives, including a fifth in 2022 and a third in 2023.
On Sunday after a caution late in the first stage and on the subsequent restart with nine laps to go, the 44-year-old driver started on the outside of the second row behind his JGR teammate Christopher Bell. Chris Buescher lined up on the inside of the front row.

The cars made it around the second turn and started going down the backstretch when Hamlin got into the rear of the No. 20, which turned left straight into the No. 17 and both cars slid down the apron for hard hits into the inside wall.
Beuscher conveyed what if felt like over the team radio moments after it happened.
“That [expletive] hurt!” Buescher said. “*********!”
But the No. 17 crew wasn’t done voicing its displeasure. A short time later, the team’s crew chief, Scott Graves, expressed his frustration on X and placed the blame solely on the No. 11 pilot.
“This team works so hard every week, had our driver in position for the end of stage 1, and the guys that would consider themselves some of the best drivers in the world can't even get through a restart,” Graves wrote. “I see why you have an insurance sponsor @dennyhamlin, can I file a claim?”
You can bet Hamlin will have a response to the comments and the incident on his "Actions Detrimental" podcast on Monday.
