Kim, 25, is entered into the women’s snowboard halfpipe event. Qualifying began at 1:30 a.m. ET Wednesday in Livigno, Italy. She distanced the field by a healthy margin with a score of 90.25. Kim’s closest rival, Sara Shimizu of Japan, finished at 87.50.
The finals are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET Thursday.
“I’m just really stoked that I was able to make it out and make it through qualifiers,” she said at the bottom of the pipe, via Reuters.
Even before Wednesday’s qualifying round, Kim was widely considered a favorite to win the event. She is the two-time defending Olympic gold medalist (2018, 2022) in women’s snowboard halfpipe. In March 2025, she won the FIS Snowboard World Championship halfpipe title in Engadin, Switzerland.
No halfpipe rider, male or female, has ever won three consecutive Olympic titles.
Among the U.S. Olympians who are already cheering Kim on: skiier Lindsay Vonn and gymnast Suni Lee.
Vonn replied to Kim’s post with two bicep emojis.
