The Canadian Hockey League has suspended Jordan Tourigny for the remainder of the 2026 Memorial Cup following a dangerous incident involving Christian Humphreys during Tuesday night’s game.

The incident occurred late in the third period of Kitchener’s 3-2 victory, which secured the Kitchener Rangers a perfect 3-0 round-robin record and a direct berth into the Memorial Cup final.

The suspension came after Tourigny repeatedly stomped on Humphreys’ skate and foot area during a battle along the boards in the Rangers’ matchup against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

Officials initially handed Tourigny a five-minute major penalty. After video review, the call was upgraded to a match penalty for kicking with intent to injure, resulting in his immediate ejection from the game.

Humphreys dropped to the ice in visible pain following the incident. Although he managed to leave under his own power, he did not return to the game.

Hockey analyst Chris Johnston later confirmed the punishment on X, writing, “The Canadian Hockey League has suspended Chicoutimi’s Jordan Tourigny for the remainder of the Memorial Cup after he stomped on Kitchener’s Christian Humphreys with his skate during last night’s game.”

The play immediately led to backlash across the hockey community.

One fan wrote, “Cheap and dirty. No place for it in the game.”

Another added, “It was an absolutely stupid move; he could have done some real damage.”

A third fan posted, “Good. Disgusting stuff. Skates are not to be used as weapons.”

CHL’s decision and the Rangers’ coach’s reaction

The CHL had little choice but to issue the strongest possible punishment. Skate-related incidents are treated with extreme seriousness because of the potential for severe injury. The league also understands that the Memorial Cup represents junior hockey’s biggest stage, making player safety and discipline even more important.

Kitchener head coach Jussi Ahokas strongly criticized the play after the game, reportedly calling it ‘coward hockey.’

“Well, that’s a cowardice play stomping with the skate. That’s not tough hockey, that’s coward hockey, that’s not in our values,” Ahokas said. “If someone does that, that’s cheap, cheapest thing (that) you can do in hockey for me.”
