The successful NFL career of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce began like most in the league through the draft. He almost put on a different uniform as he expected to be selected by the New York Jets.
During the recent episode of New Heights, Kelce shared his experience during the 2013 NFL Draft and his call with head coach Andy Reid.
“I thought I was going to be the first tight end taken off the board. Ended up being the fifth. The Jets were sold on me. I had a great interview with Rex Ryan. said Kelce: ‘It was between you and Geno (Smith). If Geno’s available, we’re gonna take him.’ And they ended up taking Geno. Thank goodness.”
After the Jets passed on Kelce, he waited until the Chiefs selected him 63rd overall in the third round. He received a memorable phone call from head coach Andy Reid.
“He asked me straight to the point. Are you going to f*** this up, man?” said Kelce, reflecting on his conversation with Reid. “No, I’m not. I’m going to be the best tight end you’ve ever coached.”
Kelce, as a tight end, has helped the Chiefs win three Super Bowls, so it is safe to say he made his head coach proud.
