Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub spoke with reporters on Thursday, revealing rookie Brashard Smith as the returner replacement for Tyquan Thornton, who remains in concussion protocol.

“He’s (Brashard Smith) going to get more just out of the fact that Tyquan (Thornton) is out. He’s going to get more. We’re going to try to get him more touches,” said Toub, “Obviously, he’s another young player that we’re trying to develop, and he’s really come a long way, and he’s done a real good job handling the football. It’s not too big for him. He’s done a good job. He’s just another one of those young players that we’re excited about.”

The former SMU standout has been featured frequently in the offense this season as a third-down back in numerous packages. He has utilized his past as a wide receiver to be a dual threat in certain situations.

Smith has spent time as a kick returner for most of the season until Thornton became an option. He has 15 kickoff returns in 14 games for 405 total yards.
