Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Cooper McDonald spoke with reporters after practice on Tuesday at Missouri Western State University. He opened up about his confidence in his role heading into the 2026 season after trying to make the roster last year.

"Yeah, for sure. Last year it was about making the squad, trying to do everything I could to make the team," said McDonald. "This year, I was talking to my brother, and I was like this training camp compared to last, everything is slowed down, starting to know the playbook, picking it up well, out here competing with everyone. So, I'm just excited for the opportunity at hand."

McDonald went unselected in the 2025 NFL Draft, but signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent after an impressive rookie minicamp tryout. He expressed his appreciation for his experience last year, which fueled his performance in this training camp.

"Just different concepts in our defense," said McDonald. "I may have kind of bunched them together last year, maybe not understand it, but this year kind of putting certain calls in different buckets, as we say. So, doing it that way."

McDonald finished his rookie season playing in all 17 games, starting one, while primarily playing on special teams. He tallied 25 total tackles, 10 solo, contributing to Dave Toub's unit.
