NFL.com's Columnist Judy Battista sat down with Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid over the weekend at the Annual League Meeting in Phoenix. Reid shared an update on Patrick Mahomes' rehab progress, along with his thoughts on the acquisition of new backup quarterback Justin Fields.

"He's doing great," Reid told Battista during the interview (transcribed by Bobby Kownack). "He spends a ton of time in the building. ... He's in there for seven hours a day. It's showing the progress. Now, to tell you a timeline? I mean, I know what he's striving for. We'll just see where it goes from there."

Mahomes returned to the field in a surprising video last Wednesday, showcasing his mobility 102 days after his injury. Reid acknowledged the importance of adding a backup quarterback with starter's ability.

"Well, we snuck out and got a good quarterback to back him up," Reid said, "So, if he (Mahomes) doesn't, you know, if he's not able to make it for the beginning of the season, then we know we've got a legitimate backup (Fields) there that can go win games for us."

The New York Jets dealt Fields to the Chiefs in exchange for a 2027 6th-round pick. Fields' 2025 season ended with 7 touchdowns and 1 interception, rushing for 383 yards and 4 touchdowns, but the team was 2-7 in games he started, and he endured 27 sacks.
