In the early days of Patrick Mahomes' career with the Kansas City Chiefs, they were one of the most explosive offenses in football.
Long bombs from Mahomes, scoring 30-plus points regularly, it was a fun time for Chiefs Kingdom. But over the past couple of seasons, that has gone away, and Kansas City now leans more on its defense and Steve Spagnuolo to keep teams under 20 points to win football games.
Having scored 30 points just twice in the regular season, there weren't many explosive plays, but for the newly drafted Brashard Smith, a receiver turned running back, he's ready to bring some much-needed juice to the offense. Smith was drafted in the seventh round with the No. 228 overall selection.
"My skill set fits perfect with the offense," Smith said. "I feel like they're already dynamic, and I feel like I'm a dynamic player, so I'm going to bring a lot of juice for the offense and special teams. Just anywhere, anytime I'm on the field, I'm going to bring some juice for sure."
We understand that there is no concept of a "perfect fit"; however, Smith possesses both the characteristics and mindset necessary to achieve success with the AFC champions. In his lone season as a running back, he rushed for 1,332 yards and 14 touchdowns, and armed with 4.39 speed, he does bring some juice to a running back room that needs it.
Plus, given he played his first three college seasons with Miami as a receiver, that is another thread to pull for Andy Reid and Matt Nagy in 2025.
The Chiefs used to be a swashbuckling offense with Mahomes under center. However, they have turned away from that in recent times, but Smith seems determined to change that in his rookie season.
