Andrew Benintendi homered off Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta on a 1-0 fastball in the bottom of the first inning.

Three pitches later, Luis Robert Jr. homered.

It was the first time the Chicago White Sox had hit back-to-back home runs this season.

Andrew Vaughn added a single later in the inning. But the Sox collected just one more hit the rest of the game — a single by Miguel Vargas in the seventh inning — while losing 7-2 to the Brewers in front of 14,904 on Tuesday at Rate Field.

“He pitches tough,” Sox manager Will Venable said of Peralta. “He made his adjustments. He came out throwing the fastball, we were ready to attack the fastball. And then he mixed it up and we just weren’t able to adjust.”

Peralta allowed two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings.

“He started the game attacking us with his fastball but I think his fastball wasn’t the usual velo,” Robert said through an interpreter. “And then he made the adjustment and then he started mixing up his pitches.”

The Sox continued mixing it up on their pitching end, using an opener for the fourth straight game to tie a major-league record established by the Tampa Bay Rays, who went that direction Sept. 2-5, 2018, according to STATS.

“It worked out where we had identified where we’re at in our bullpen, our starter and how it lined up with the A’s lineup (for the three games in West Sacramento, Calif.), it ended up working out,” Venable said of the strategy before the game. “It put our starters in some really good spots and we were able to get the most out of them, they all pitched deep and had long outings. We thought it was good.

“This was another lineup we expected the lefties to be at the top, and they countered, but that’s part of this. You run that risk. At the same time, it puts (Tuesday’s bulk pitcher) Bryse (Wilson) in a good spot to come into this game and have some righties there. We are taking it day by day, series by series.”

And for the third time during their stretch, the Sox turned to Tyler Gilbert to fill the opener role.

In doing so, Gilbert became the first major-league pitcher to start three times in a four-game period since Milwaukee’s Zack Greinke in 2012, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Greinke was ejected after four pitches on July 7 at Houston, threw three innings the next day in the final game of the first half and then five innings to open the second half on July 13 against Pittsburgh.

Gilbert served as the opener in each of the first two games against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park. He surrendered a home run in the first of his two innings of work on Tuesday.

Wilson followed, allowing three runs on two hits with one strikeout and three walks in 3 1/3 innings.

“I thought I executed well,” Wilson said. “Three walks to the lefties, but not terrible. Thought I attacked the zone well, thought my stuff was really good.

“I think I can just be a little bit more aggressive and trust my stuff with the lefties a little bit more instead of veering away from damage and just attack those guys in zone.”

One of the walks came during a pivotal sixth inning. The Sox still led 2-1, but the Brewers had a runner on first base with one out. Wilson walked Isaac Collins and then surrendered an RBI single to William Contreras, tying the score at 2.

Brandon Eisert replaced Wilson and struck out Christian Yelich.

The Sox intentionally walked right-handed hitter Rhys Hoskins to create the lefty-lefty matchup against Sal Frelick. But Eisert plunked Frelick, bringing in the go-ahead run.

Caleb Durbin, a Lake Forest product, followed with a two-run single.

“He did a good job there,” Venable said of Wilson. “Just the trouble towards the end of his outing. But he did his job and kept us in the game. We’ve just got to find a way to score some runs and finish off that ending there in the sixth.”

The Brewers added two more runs in the eighth while sending the Sox (7-22) to their 12th loss in their last 15 games.
