Today’s Reflections
I thought this was more important than anything I have to say:
- Gordon Edes (Chicago Sun-Times): Cubs legend Billy Williams celebrates his 88th birthday with pride, enthusiasm and memories. “The Hall of Famer cheers on the next generation of Chicago stars with the contentment of a living legend.”
Great story. Great man.
And certainly more positive than anything I could write about. Yes, PCA is on a monster run — a reverse-cycle, three leadoff home runs in four games (as of Tuesday) and back to his usual stellar defensive play. But other than a walk-off win and a good hit or two, the offense is still struggling. And the pitching injuries continue to accumulate. A blockbuster trade for a very good SP isn’t going to make much of a difference if none of the other pitchers can stay healthy or perform to previous levels.

Tuesday night’s game:
- Meghan Montemurro (Chicago Sun-Times): Chicago Cubs starter Edward Cabrera exits early with a right hand cramp — and offensive woes persist. “Chicago Cubs starter Edward Cabrera walked off the field with a trainer mid-inning Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies.”

Assorted stories:
- Patrick Mooney (The Athletic {$}): Cubs’ Edward Cabrera exits start with cramp, the latest issue in his spotty season. “Chicago believed it could unlock a top-of-the-rotation starter in Cabrera, but the right-hander had another setback Tuesday.”
Sheesh, Kipnis is blasting this Cubs team right now. He's saying he's bothered because it doesn't feel like there's a team leader. He's shocked to hear that Edward Cabrera asked to come out. He said he wants bull dog pitchers, not ones who ask to come out. Pretty bold words!

- Brandon Glick (Cubbies Crib): Creative Seiya Suzuki trade idea ignores bigger Cubs problem entirely.“Lateral moves aren’t going to win championships.” (My emphasis)
- Vinnie Duber (Chicago Sun-Times): Why a sacrifice fly was Craig Counsell’s favorite moment from night Pete Crow-Armstrong hit for cycle. “Crow-Armstrong delivered the 13th cycle in Cubs history Monday, but the highlight for his manager wasn’t the homer, triple, double or single. Rather, the skipper enjoyed a sac fly more than anything.”
- Zoe Grossman (Chicago Cubs On SI): Why Cubs Star Pete Crow-Armstrong Could Suddenly Join the NL MVP Race. “The 24-year-old is on pace for the best individual Cubs season since the turn of the century.”
- Jordan Campbell (Cubbies Crib): Cubs are confronting harsh reality about Michael Conforto turnaround. “Michael Conforto has fallen on hard times since looking like one of the best offseason deals the Chicago Cubs made.”
- Randy Holt (North Side Baseball): Jed Hoyer Has Learned His Lesson and the Cubs Have Finally Stabilized Their Bench. “A central issue of Jed Hoyer’s tenure atop the Chicago Cubs front office has been his inability to properly assemble a bench. Those woes appear to be behind them so far in 2026.”
Monday night’s game:
- Casey McAleer (Da Windy City): Pete Crow-Armstrong joins Cubs history with a cycle as his superstar season continues. “The Cubs outfielder became just the 13th player in franchise history to hit for the cycle.
- Meghan Montemurro (Chicago Tribune {$}): Chicago Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong hits for the 13th cycle in franchise history in a 5-4 walk-off win. “Pete Crow-Armstrong became the first Chicago Cub to hit a reverse cycle — home run, triple, double, single in order — in franchise history on Monday.”
Injured list notes:
- Michael Cerami (Bleacher Nation): Yep, We Saw That One Coming: Daniel Palencia to the Injured List. “I think anyone watching last night’s game knew this was coming, but it is now officially here: For the second time this season, Cubs closer Daniel Palencia is headed to the Injured List.”
- Jordan Campbell (Cubbies Crib): Cubs bullpen now facing a scary reality after sudden Daniel Palencia injury. “The Chicago Cubs’ bullpen is facing a nightmare scenario with Daniel Palencia heading to the IL with an elbow injury.”
- Elias Schuster (Chicago Cubs On SI): Cubs Injury Updates: Matthew Boyd Throwing Again, Justin Steele Takes Another Step. “The Chicago Cubs got some positive news on both Matthew Boyd and Justin Steele this week.”
Food For Thought:
Howlin Wolf’s reputation grew throughout the blues revival of the 1960s, and he continued to perform until November 1975, when he performed for the last time alongside fellow blues musician B.B. King. He died on January 10, 1976, after years of deteriorating health. In 1980, Howlin’ Wolf was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, and in 1991, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
A ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet in Turkey went off-script when an orange cat wandered onto stage and interacted with the performance.
