The Chicago Bears selected wide receiver Luther Burden III with their first second-round pick. After picking tight end Colston Loveland at 10th overall in the first round, taking a receiver at 39th overall was not on anybody's radar. This is a surprising move for general manager Ryan Poles and his staff.
With Ben Johnson in charge of the team, now, however, it isn't crazy to see Poles be convinced to go offense. Johnson is considered one of the best offensive minds in the NFL after developing the Detroit Lions into a top offense in the league.
Burden totaled 192 receptions for 2,263 yards and 21 touchdowns in 38 games with Missouri. His skillset should allow him to step onto the field and make an impact right away.
When the ball is in Burden's hands, he can make things happen. He is shifty, fast, and can break tackles. If the Bears know what's best, they will find ways to get him the ball as often as they can. Burden can line up as a receiver or start from the backfield. Either way, he is the type of player who can use these skills to make him an impactful player in the NFL.
Burden has a little bit of a smaller frame compared to his fellow receivers. His hands and wingspan are much smaller than teams are used to. That may make it difficult for him to get the ball in his hands at times before he can make his skills useful. This is something he will have to adapt to once he starts playing at the pro level.
The Bears now have a ton of weapons. After drafting tight end Colston Loveland, to pair with Cole Kmet in the first round, Burden will join the likes of DJ Moore and Rome Odunze in the wide receiver room. With D'Andre Swift as the current top back, second-year quarterback Caleb Williams has a ton of good weapons. Burden would fit in well as the slot receiver near the tight ends while Odunze and Moore line up on the outside. Williams is going to have playmakers at all parts of the field. Ben Johnson has what it takes to scheme Burden into the mix well.
