The first drop of history happened during a last-to-first victory on the first Saturday in May by the 3-year-old colt Golden Tempo in the Kentucky Derby.

The next drop happened when the Cherie DeVaux-trained thoroughbred racehorse won the third leg of the Triple Crown, winning the 158th Belmont Stakes in DeVaux's home state of New York.

Now, to honor it all, Woodford Reserve is honoring the trailblazing trainer – the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby and the second woman to train a Belmont winner – with a signature bourbon.

Cherie DeVaux Derby Gold is a champion-grade Single Barrel Double Oaked bourbon hand-selected out of four barrels by DeVaux herself. The bourbon was released June 26 in very limited qualities, with a portion of the profits going to a cause dear to DeVaux's heart: thoroughbred aftercare.

DeVaux told The Courier Journal in May that she liked the podium her newfound fame gave her to point to accredited aftercare programs for racehorses.

"We are in an era where horse racing, at this moment, is the safest as it's been," DeVaux told The Courier Journal. "I feel honored that I get to be in a sport where I can say, 'Here's what we've done. Here's the strides we've taken.' Do we have a lot more to go? Absolutely. But we are on the way to getting better."

Up to $5,000 of the exclusive bourbon's proceeds will go to Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, a nonprofit that retrains and rehomes thoroughbred horses after they are retired from the racetrack.

The limited edition was launched at an event at the distillery on June 26, where DeVaux signed bottles.

In a video posted to the LinkedIn account of Brown Forman's LinkedIN, the corporation that owns Woodford Reserve, DeVaux is seen taking a tour with Woodford Reserve master distiller Elizabeth McCall. DeVaux said she'd been on distillery tours before, but the experience of picking a barrel and holding a bottle to sample the liquid straight from the barrel to a snifter was a first.

McCall took DeVaux and others through a proper tasting.

"Deep breath in," McCall said in the company's video highlights of the day.

"I like the finish of the flavor of C," DeVaux said. "D is the best. Oh, this one's really good."

The bourbon sold out online the day it was released. It was also available in very limited quantities at the distillery in Versailles.
