Chargers trade proposal swaps two first-round picks for generational 23-sack edge rusher originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Chargers’ defense held their weight in 25-26, totaling 45 sacks, forcing 10 fumbles, recording 1,176 tackles, and only allowing 20 points per game (ranking 9th in the league).
That said, Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes that if the Los Angeles discovers they have a chance to add a generational 23-sack edge rusher to the fold this offseason, they’ll do so by sending two-first round picks (2027 and 2028) and a second-round pick (2027) to the Cleveland Browns for the two-time Defensive Player of the Year and a third-round pick (2027).
“Myles Garrett set a new record with 23.0 sacks in 2025,” Kline wrote last Wednesday. “He enters his age-30 season, a year after his historic contract extension, stuck in an all too familiar spot. The Browns are bad. Their quarterback situation is abysmal, and there's no clear path to contention.”
“Garrett could use an escape hatch, and this wouldn't be the worst time for Cleveland to cash in and recoup significant assets for an aging star. The Chargers, meanwhile, need help on the defensive line and would benefit profoundly from Garrett's unique versatility and the multi-faceted pressure he can put on an opponent.”
“This is a chance for Los Angeles to make up ground on the Chiefs and Broncos in a wide-open division, bolstering an already-talented defense while hoping Mike McDaniel and Justin Herbert can take the offense to new heights.”
Garrett has been a standout edge rusher with the Browns for nearly a decade, yet has only reached the postseason twice (Cleveland defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2021 AFC Wild Card round before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs, and lost to the Houston Texans in the 2024 Wild Card round).
Garrett won’t be in his prime forever, and with Cleveland being years away from legitimate contention in the AFC, no one could blame the former No. 1 overall pick for wanting to find a new home.
The Chargers possess a far more competent foundation, and, as Kline noted, Los Angeles’ defense is already above average without Garrett on the roster.
Add the Texas A&M product to the fold, and the Chargers will be in business moving forward.
