The Chargers have made a significant move to bolster their offensive unit, reportedly hiring former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as their new offensive coordinator, barring a change of heart, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, per Jeff Darlington.

Schefter added that McDaniel has informed other teams that they’re out, and the Bolts clearly want him. The two sides are having dinner tonight. But the expectation across the league is that McDaniel will be staying in LA.

McDaniel, 42, was fired by Miami after a 35-33 record over four seasons, including two playoff berths. His playcalling led Miami's offense to top rankings in yards and scoring in 2023. Before the Dolphins, McDaniel served as the 49ers' offensive coordinator in 2021 and run game coordinator from 2017 to 2020. His units ranked highly in rushing, including No. 2 in 2019 en route to an NFC title and Super Bowl LIV appearance.

Multiple reports noted that while teams like the Buccaneers and Eagles aggressively pursued him for offensive coordinator roles, the chance to coach Justin Herbert and return to California solidified his decision.
