The Chargers are considered one of the best landing spots for former first-round quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
The experiment with the Vikings appears to be over, as McCarthy lost the starting job to veteran Kyler Murray. There is a chance that the Vikings could deal McCarthy, and if so, the Chargers are viewed as one of the best spots for him to land.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report said reuniting with head coach Jim Harbahg could help McCarthy revitalize his career.
"Reuniting with head coach Jim Harbaugh could help McCarthy regain the intangibles that made him a first-round pick in the first place. With Harbaugh and offensive assistant Kirk Campbell—McCarthy's quarterbacks coach at Michigan—in the fold, L.A. could provide a familiar environment.
"It could also provide a good one for a young, developing signal-caller should he get playing time. New offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy is one of the league's more creative offensive play-callers, while Rashawn Slater, Joe Alt, Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Omarion Hampton headline a terrific offensive group."
The chances of the Vikings trading McCarthy seem thin. With that in mind, the Chargers will likely enter the season with Trey Lance as their No. 2 option and DJ Uiagalelei as their QB3.
If, for any reason, Justin Herbert were forced to miss time, Los Angeles would be in a difficult spot until he returned.
McCarthy has not panned out in the NFL thus far. Injuries and poor play have played a factor, and he is set to enter the 2026 season.
The former Michigan Wolverine will be the backup at the start of the season, which is not what the Vikings expected after they took him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
If the Vikings decide to pull the plug on McCarthy, the Chargers make all the sense in the world.
McCarthy played his best football with Harbaugh in their time in Michigan. The Illinois native looked the sharpest under Harbaugh. Their time at Michigan was marked by winning efficiently, high completion rates and a national title in their final season in Ann Arbor.
If the Chargers were to make a move for McCarthy, the chances of him taking over Herbert are slim to none. However, the Chargers would certainly be in a better spot at their QB2 spot moving forward.
