Just a week removed from the 2025 NFL draft has many already looking forward to the 2026 version despite the fact that the Los Angeles Chargers will begin rookie minicamp next weekend. The Chargers just wrapped up the 2025 class, but could there be a clear No. 1 need for next year already on the minds of many?

If you find yourself perusing through the mock drafts, you might find one particular position at the top of the needs list for head coach Jim Harbaugh and the Bolts. Getting more help to franchise quarterback Justin Herbert was the goal this past year, but did they do enough? We can't really answer that question at the moment, however, this is something we can put a pin in and come back later.

Reviewing the latest mock draft from ESPN's Jordan Reid, he has the Chargers going wide receiver with former Oklahoma wideout Nic Anderson as the target. Anderson played in one game for the Sooners last season before aggravating the injury and being shut down for the season. Anderson has since transferred to LSU, where he will be catching passes from fellow first-round prospect Garrett Nussmeier.

What Jordan Reid says of Nic Anderson

There aren't many clear top options in this receiver class right now, but I'm projecting a big season from Anderson. That would put him in the first-round mix. After setting the Oklahoma freshman touchdown receptions record in 2023 (10), he played in only one game in 2024 because of a quad injury and then transferred to LSU. Playing with Nussmeier at quarterback will help his profile. The Chargers could put together a solid group of young receivers in Anderson, Ladd McConkey, Tre Harris and Quentin Johnston.

This year's team is welcoming back Mike Williams, who played for the Jets and Steelers last season. In 18 games between the two teams, he hauled in just 21 receptions for 298 yards and a single touchdown. Perhaps being back in sunny Los Angeles will do the trick for Williams. But this could just be a one-year return to the Chargers, and the team looks to a youth movement at the position with Anderson's selection.

We won't get ahead of ourselves here, but there is plenty on the line for Williams and the Chargers this upcoming season. As for Anderson, if his freshman season is any indication of what is to come, get ready for an explosive receiver who towers over most corners with his 6'4" frame.
