Khalil Mack made NFL history with the one-year, $18 million deal he signed with the Chargers on Saturday.
According to Spotrac, Mack's deal with the Bolts secures him over $205 million earned over 13 seasons, which is the most by a defensive player in NFL history.
Mack has quite the illustrious resume, earning Pro Bowl honors nine times across 13 seasons. He was also a three-time First-Team All-Pro and the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Thus, it's no surprise the veteran's fully guaranteed extension, which was announced Saturday, has now earned him the most money by a defensive player in the league's history.
Mack will return to the Chargers for his fifth season with the team and it's evident he's eyeing a playoff win in 2026. As an unrestricted free agent, the edge had the opportunity to explore all options on the market.
Mack returning to LA before the NFL free agency opens Wednesday signals the veteran's belief in the Chargers.
General manager Joe Hortiz has plenty to work with financially in free agency this spring as the team has nearly $100 million in cap space. While the team already took care of Mack, the Chargers will have to decide whether to bring back Odafe Oweh, who is poised to earn a big money contract in free agency.
The Chargers expressed a desire to bring both edges back, and that could still very well be the case.
Beyond the defense, the Chargers have much to address offensively as the team looks to add more protection and weapons around Justin Herbert.
All of those points will be addressed in the coming weeks.
