Per Mike Jurecki, Kent Somers and NFL cap guru Andrew Brandt, the new CBA contains an out clause for prorated signing bonuses that allows NFL teams to release two players every year who have large signing bonuses and instead of having them accelerate immediately when released, the cap hit would instead defer into the following season. That means, we could release Kevin Kolb and instead of saving one million dollars due to the prorated signing bonus acceleration, we would save 10 million dollars and defer that other 9 million dollars until 2013.

Yea i just read that on another board and that is good news for us. IF they redo Fitz roster bonus and let Brown go we will have funds to get PM a WR and an OT.

Good news all around.

Not quite: Kolb rec'd $2M of his signing bonus last year; $8M remaining. They would take the normal $2M prorated charge under the contract this year and move $6M to 2013. Bottomline one creates an additional $8M under the CAP for this year, when one adds his 2012 $2M salary.

Ok, wait.

He's due 10 million this year. $1 in salary. $7 million roster bonus. $2 million signing bonus.

Under this, we defer the future signing bonus money ($6 million more) to 2013, and are only on the hook for the $2 million signing for this season for the cap. That's an $8 million dollar cap savings in 2012. Or, if we are able to defer all of it until next year (as that post seems to say) then we'd owe $8 million to the cap in dead space next year, and have ZERO cap hit this season.

You are right. However, I do recall reading that there is a prorated charge for this year on the signing bonus, if you decide to defer. Thus, when adding the deferred $6M and $2M salary one creates an $8M Cap saving in 2012.
