Jarren Duran got into another verbal altercation with a fan on Saturday at Fenway Park, which resulted in Red Sox manager Chad Tracy asking security to remove the fan.
Tracy was asked about the incident during his weekly appearance on WEEI and he defended Duran.
“Just to be honest with you. You don’t have video of it, but, there was a fan behind us that was pretty, I guess, excessively taunting over the course of multiple innings,” Tracy said. “And you could see by the look on his face that it was with the intent of trying to invoke a reaction, which, by the way, that’s ridiculous. If you’re gonna come to a baseball game, come enjoy a baseball game.
“But to deliberately be, as a grown person taunting players, trying to evoke a reaction, I find that to be nonsense as well,” he continued.
Tracy was interrupted by host Rich Shertenlieb, who told the manager that Duran can’t take taunts personal and Duran’s reaction seemed like an overreaction.
“It wasn’t just Jarren. Because there was a handful of us that had been listening to it, there was a handful of us at the simultaneous moment,” Tracy said, who added they went to security and asked for the fan to be moved.
“You can move him to somewhere else, but we don’t have to sit there and listen to that,” Tracy added.
It’s unclear what was said by the fan, but reports suggest it was Duran’s batting average amid his offensive struggles. His batting average dropped to .198 after Friday.
Duran said after the Red Sox’ 4-1 win over the Yankees that “nothing happened” when asked about the incident.
Tracy noted he wasn’t disappointed by how Duran reacted.
It wasn’t the first time Duran had issues with the fans. He and Royals fans were jawing at each other in 2022 and had previous altercations with fans in Cleveland.
