The college football season is only a month or so away from making its grand arrival. Soon, the sports world will prepare for Week Zero and tune into any matchup it can after seven long months without football. It was an offseason filled with drama, blockbuster transfers, and major roster moves.

One of the most notable transfers of the offseason was former Duke quarterback Darian Mensah. He had an opportunity to enter the NFL Draft but instead decided to return for a fourth season. However, it would not be with Duke. Instead, he transferred to the College Football Playoff runner-up: the Miami Hurricanes.

Prominent college football analyst David Pollack discussed the move on his show, See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack, and suggested it might have been the most important acquisition of the offseason.

“Miami would be screwed without a quarterback,” Pollack said. “They know that. So they’re like, ‘Forget that crap. We’ll spend whatever it takes to get there. Because we’ve got all of these other things that make us get there.'”

Acquisition of the CFB offseason?

Miami acquired Carson Beck through the transfer portal last year. Beck arrived after suffering a season-ending elbow injury during his time at Georgia. However, the move paid off as he guided the Hurricanes through the playoffs and into the national championship game.

With that in mind, imagine what Mensah can bring to Miami. Mensah possesses more upside and athleticism than Beck, and he provides an intriguing dynamic to the Hurricanes’ offense. His skill set generated first-round projections last season, and another strong year could help him solidify that status.

Pollack could be right that this was the biggest offseason acquisition. Plenty of football remains to be played before that claim can be confirmed. However, there is no denying that Mensah brings a unique element that could help push Miami toward a championship.

In 2025, Mensah threw for 34 touchdowns and six interceptions while passing for nearly 4,000 yards. He also led Duke to an ACC title and a bowl game victory. Despite winning the conference championship, the College Football Playoff Committee left Duke out of the field.

Now, Darian Mensah has the opportunity to take another major step in his football career while playing for a team with national championship aspirations. The question remains: Can he lead Miami back to the title game?
