For the second year in a row, Miles Nesmith has been crowned Tennessee's best.
The Memphis Central senior jumper was named the Gatorade Tennessee Boys Track and Field Player of the Year, Gatorade announced June 26. Nesmith, also The Commercial Appeal's 2026 Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year, joins St. Agnes' Claire Wetick, who won Gatorade's girls award this year.
Throughout his final preps season, Nesmith proved himself as not only the best athlete in the state, but one of the best in the country. After winning his fourth and fifth career TSSAA state championships in the Class AAA long jump and triple jump, Nesmith finished first at the USA Track & Field Under-20 championships in the triple jump in early June.
In April, the 6-foot-3 athlete finished first and set a state record in the triple jump at the Penn Relays with a leap of 53 feet, one inch. It was the best mark of any high school triple jumper in the country this season.
"Nesmith's triple jump mark is stunning these days as excellence in the horizontal jumps is at a premium," said Rich Gonzalez, editor of PrepCalTrack.com in the release. "His [triple jump] ranks as the No. 12 wind-legal all-time (for preps), but 10 of those marks came in 1999 or earlier. There’s only one kid in the country with a wind-legal mark within two feet of him this spring."
Gatorade's award recognizes not just athletic achievement, but "excellence in sport, academics and community." The release highlighted Nesmith's 3.38 GPA, as well as his time volunteering locally at summer track meets.
Nesmith has signed to continue his academic and athletic career at Kansas State University.
