West Ham United have broken the Championship record transfer fee after agreeing a £22 million deal for Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, according to Sky Sports. West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo had been looking to get the Hoops star to the London Stadium club all summer and has now got his wish. The Hammers had two bids rejected by Celtic last month for Engels, but the two clubs have now struck a deal. The 22-year-old Belgium international is due to undergo a medical in London today ahead of joining West Ham.
This deal breaks the English Championship record transfer fee paid out, with the current record being the £17.5m paid by Ipswich Town to Nordsjaelland for Sindre Walle Egeli last summer. Celtic rejected £25m for the soon-to-be West Ham player from Nottingham Forest in the last winter transfer window. They wanted a similar figure this summer, but Engels kept pushing for the move and the Hoops hierarchy agreed that getting £22m for him is good business.
The Belgian has remained professional all through the saga, making two Scottish Premiership appearances for Celtic this season.
