Celina Independent School District has appointed Brent Whitson as its new athletic director, filling the position left vacant by Bill Elliott’s retirement earlier this year.
Superintendent Tom Maglisceau announced the hire on Monday, with Whitson set to start on March 23. The district formally introduced him during a regular board meeting on Monday evening.
Whitson comes from Denison High School, where he has served as athletic director and head football coach since 2021. Before that, he held head coaching positions at Richardson High School in Texas, Broken Arrow High School in Oklahoma, and South Grand Prairie High School, where he spent a decade. His first head coaching role was at Shawnee High School in Oklahoma, where he led the team to a championship.
He began his coaching career in Weatherford, Texas, after graduating from East Central University in Oklahoma.
“Lisa and I are thrilled to be part of the proud and growing community of Celina, Texas,” Whitson said in a news release. “We are incredibly grateful that God has placed us in Celina ISD. ‘Job One’ is taking care of students and giving them every opportunity to achieve excellence. The Celina Bobcats have a proud history and a bright future, and I am humbled by the opportunity to lead this tremendous staff of coaches moving forward.”
Maglisceau described Whitson as respected among peers for his character and trustworthiness.
“Celina Athletics has built, for generations, a championship tradition that deserves to be honored, and I am confident that Brent Whitson is the leader to continue building that legacy,” the superintendent said. “As this community and our district continue to grow, we must build systems that sustain our culture of excellence for decades to come. Brent has demonstrated his ability to support and inspire the strengths of his coaches and his programs, and he will work tirelessly with our athletes, coaches, parents, and teachers to lead Celina Athletics to continued success through the next chapter of our great story.”
The district noted that Whitson has already met with coaches and staff to facilitate a smooth transition.
Elliott, the former athletic director and head football coach, announced his retirement in January while on paid, non-disciplinary leave. His departure followed a criminal investigation into his son,Caleb Elliott, a former middle school football coach who was arrested and charged with multiple counts of child sexual abuse involving boys he coached.
The move came one day after the Celina ISD board released a summary of its investigation into staff actions related to the accusations against Caleb Elliott. It drew mixed reactions, including calls from parents and state lawmakers for Bill Elliott to face accountability.
Whitson, who is married with two sons, steps into a program known for its longstanding success in Texas athletics.
