Of the Dallas Cowboys two star receivers, one seems to always be in the news this offseason while the other’s name has only popped up when he’s saying something nice. And when CeeDee Lamb called the Cowboys defense “annoying,” he was being nice.
Speculation around George Pickens after his absence from voluntary OTAs is also trending in a good direction as the mandatory part of June gets closer. And whenever Caleb Downs’ name appears, it’s always been good news so far.

Dallas isn’t doing much this week, but here is where they are now.

Dallas wideout CeeDee Lamb has been the receiver who hasn’t created much noise this offseason, which is a good thing. He did grab a few headlines for the right reasons, albeit in a funny way, when he described new defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s defense as “annoying.”
Obviously, that’s much better for a defense than being accommodating, which describes the 2025 struggles.
After two days of OTAs, here’s what Lamb told Jon Machota of The Athletic about the new defense:
“It’s annoying,” Lamb said. “It’s been annoying to prepare against. But obviously seeing it in practice every day, it’s kind of unique. Just seeing the different guys communicate and be able to understand and take what they learn from the meeting room and being able to easily translate it on the field. It’s good to go against. It’s very tricky.”
Dallas Cowboys rookie Caleb Downs, who has had Dallas Cowboys fans juiced since he was drafted 11th overall, recently was a guest on the “St. Brown Podcast” that is co-hosted by Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brother, NFL wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown.
He shed a little light on wearing No. 13 through OTAs, without confirming he’ll stay in that number. Downs also invoked his mother.
Downs said: “My mom literally said this to me the other day, ‘I’ve never seen anybody wear 13 and it be a good player. I’m like, first off, you’re hating. Second off, you’re still going to wear the number because I’m wearing it, so it doesn’t really matter what it is.”
There actually have been some good 13s, but offensive players: Quarterbacks Dan Marino and Kirk Warner and wide receivers Mike Evans, Odell Beckham Jr. and Keenan Allen.
Meanwhile, Bleacher Report’s Moe Motin rated the drafting of Downs as one of his top 25 moves of the offseason, putting him in a category of five “Rookies Who Will Make a Significant Immediate Impact.”
Of Downs, Motin writes: “Bleacher Report's scouting department ranked Caleb Downs as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2026 class. Likely because he plays a non-premium position, the Ohio State product fell out of the top 10, and the Dallas Cowboys moved up one spot for the two-time unanimous All-American. Dallas had to revamp its defense, which gave up the most points and second-most yards last year. Downs has the intangibles and versatility to reform one of the league's worst defensive units.”
The George Pickens watch now moves to June 16-18, when teams report for mandatory minicamps that will incur fines for players who skip. At this point coach Marty Schottenheimer predicted that Pickens will be at minicamp, and Sports Illustrated writer Albert Breer thinks so too.
His point is that Pickens didn’t have to sign his franchise tender before minicamp, and surely he wouldn’t have if he knew he was going to miss the workouts. The three days of fines would be $107,911, barely a dent in the $27 million deal Pickens agreed to, but also hinted that wouldn’t have come up if he had waited to sign his deal.
Breer writes: “Pickens signed his franchise tender in late April and has skipped the team’s entire offseason program. If he’d planned to miss the minicamp to make a statement, the common-sense route to take would have been to not sign the tender until after the minicamp was complete, because then, Pickens wouldn’t be subject to fines for missing it.”
