Twelve years.
That’s how long it had been since Urbandale made an appearance in the Iowa high school boys state basketball tournament.
And much like the last time the J-Hawks made it – when Urbandale lost to Bettendorf in the quarterfinals – this year's trip was short-lived.
Cedar Falls – the top-seeded and only undefeated team in the tournament – proved too much for 8-seed Urbandale, taking down the J-Hawks, 73-53, on March 9 in a Class 4A quarterfinal at Casey's Center.
“Since freshman year, we’ve always been dreaming of this,” Urbandale senior Jake Pargeon said about being a part of the class that brought the J-Hawks back to the tournament. “It’s just good, in our senior year, to be able to do it.”
He scored a game-leading 30 points for Urbandale, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Tigers.
“The plan was to try to keep everybody in check, so it wasn’t like we were letting him go,” Cedar Falls coach Ryan Schultz said of Pargeon’s performance. “It’s just, you’re not going to keep all those phenomenal shooters on the perimeter. It’s just a lot of territory to guard.”
Pargeon laid down a dunk for the first points of the game, but that was the last time Urbandale held a lead against Cedar Falls. The Tigers scored multiple times for every J-Hawks basket, and it only worsened in the second quarter.
It took Urbandale nearly four minutes to score its first points of the second quarter. Cedar Falls upped its lead to 27 points toward the end of the half. Pargeon sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the J-Hawks headed to the locker room trailing 41-17.
Pargeon accounted for 12 of his team’s 17 first-half points, and he added a team-high four rebounds in the first 16 minutes of the game.
The J-Hawks matched Cedar Falls point-for-point in the third quarter, with each team netting 17. Urbandale outscored the Tigers 19-15 in the final quarter but the deficit was too much to overcome.
“We were kind of crawling our way back in,” said Pargeon. “But yeah, at that point, it’s a little bit too late to be able to come back and win.”
Will Gerdes and Haydon Kimbrough each scored 28 points for Cedar Falls.
The J-Hawks finished the season with a 14-9 record and their first state tournament trip since 2014. Cedar Falls (23-0) advanced to the Class 4A semifinals on Thursday, March 12 at 10:30 a.m., where the Tigers will face Dowling for a spot in the championship game.
