ASHLAND It slowly started to build.

Ashland began to feel a Green wave of momentum in the second half after Jasper Davis turned an interception into a pick-six.

The Greenup County side started to get loud, but Cam Davis had the silencer.

Cam Davis opened the district opener with a 73-yard TD sprint down the sideline. The senior produced a mirror image as he motored down the same stretch of turf for 58 yards to paydirt in the final frame. It lifted the Tomcats to a 35-21 win at Putnam Stadium Friday.

Ashland’s backfield made the most noise and racked up its own share of yardage in the district opener. The Tomcats recorded nine runs of 20 or more yards, seven in the first half, and three different backs found the end zone. Ashland ended the night with 475 yards on the ground and averaged nearly 15 a carry.

“They know (the offensive line) with open up holes,” Ashland coach Chad Tackett said, “and as long as they follow their blocks and be where they need to be, they know there will be some open lanes. It may take a series or two, but those guys are eventually going to open some things up. We just have to continue to get better with ball security and taking advantage of our opportunities in the passing game.”

The Tomcats' defense held its own and helped the team overcome four turnovers. JJ Keyes, Keshawn Newman and Luke McCoy were among several players constantly in the Musketeers' backfield, nagating the opponent’s rushing attack. Greenup County had 10 negative plays in the run game and ended with 69 rushing yards.

“JJ and Keshawn played extremely well,” Tackett said, “as well as Brody Simpkins. Those kept us in the game and, for the most part, controlled their offense. We gave up a touchdown in the first half and one in the second half. The other score was of an interception return. We played great defense and those guys had a lot to do with that.

“We threw two picks tonight, one for a TD,” he added. “We have to value the importance of holding on to the football on offense. Our offensive line did a good job imposing their will tonight. Our rushing offense was really good, but we have to develop a passing attack at some point.”

Greenup County (2-4) leaned on that side of the football to rally from a 21-point halftime deficit. After using big plays to build the lead, Ashland had two three-and-outs in the third quarter, along with a fumble on special teams.

“We had a bad time adjusting to their speed,” Greenup County Travis Jones said. “It wasn’t anything schematically. We just haven't seen backs like Cam Davis, really anybody they put back there. We missed a lot of tackles early. We really settled down in the second half. Our defense has really held us together this year. Jasper’s pick-six really ignited us, and I think our guys started believing at that point that they might actually win this football game.”

Jasper Davis scored TDs in three different phases: running, throwing and on defense. The passing game started to click in the second half. The Musketeers cashed in on an Ashland fumble when Jasper Davis connected with a leaping Landry Lewis in the corner of the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown reception.

“He’s doing a heck of a job,” Jones said of Davis. “He’s getting better every week. Playing a high school quarterback is not an easy job, especially with the stuff we do on offense. We ask a lot out of our quarterback. … Over the last two weeks, he’s been playing really good football.”

Greenup County fought back to knot the score at 7-7 in the opening frame. Nolan Clarkson found Kasey Gammon on the halfback pass and Gammon carried it into Ashland territory after the 58-yard pitch and catch. Asher Wireman carried the ball near the goal line on an RPO play and Jasper Davis followed with a short run. He scored as he stretched the ball over the goal line.

Trevonte Taylor answered quickly to give Ashland (4-2) the lead back. He ran through a large hole and dashed for a 26-yard touchdown run. The sophomore added a late interception to secure the home victory.

“I think Trevonte solidified himself as a go-to player on our team,” Tackett said. “He is a phenomenal running back. He played a lot of defense for us tonight and did a great job. He’s proven himself on this big stage. Daylen Farrow is another guy who had a big game last week. We have a good stable of running backs.”

Cam Davis finished with 194 rushing yards and enjoyed a third TD on the night, untouched for 35 yards late in the first half. Simpkins logged big runs to set up his teammate. Simpkins took care of it himself on the Tomcats' next possession. He made a few tacklers miss, found his own lane and rumbled for a 60-yard trip to the end zone. He posted 192 ground yards. Taylor added 71.

Jasper Davis was 13 of 22 for the Musketeers. Gammon had 4 catches for 106 yards.

“I told the guys after the game that I’m never happy with a loss,” Jones said, “but we are at a point in our program where our guys are starting to believe and we're getting really close to taking that next step and be able to beat teams like Ashland and Johnson Central.”
