Paul Pierce thinks Cason Wallace needs to focus on his career first if the Oklahoma City Thunder can’t give him what he wants, both financially and in terms of playing time. As a Hall of Famer, Pierce recently chimed in on the situation. He stated players shouldn’t be asked to give up opportunities just because of loyalty, since teams themselves aren’t shy about making tough choices for business reasons.

This past season, Wallace significantly contributed to the Thunder’s deep playoff run. At just 22 years old, he’s become a key part of the rotation, getting noticed for his defensive skills and offering crucial minutes. With extension eligibility coming up, it’s natural for folks to wonder about his future with the team.

During a recent discussion on “No Fouls Given”, Pierce explained why he would support Wallace pursuing a bigger opportunity elsewhere if the Thunder are unwilling or unable to compensate him accordingly.

“Now, Cason Wallace has won a championship. He’s played his role on a great team. Now, if there’s an opportunity for him to go somewhere else and make more money and get a better role, I’m all for it. Like all this, oh, be all loyal to the team. Well, at the end of the day when teams aren’t loyal to the players, GMs aren’t loyal like they’re going to ask him to take a pay that isn’t conducive to what he brings to the team.”
Paul Pierce says it’s a no-brainer for Cason Wallace to move on from OKC if they can’t pay him what he deserves:

Pierce’s comments come at a time when Wallace’s name has become a frequent topic around the Thunder, while Oklahoma City still controls his contract for next season, the former Kentucky guard is now eligible for a rookie-scale extension, making this one of the more significant decisions facing the organization this summer.

The Thunder have built one of the league’s deepest young cores; however, retaining that group long-term will eventually require difficult financial choices. Wallace has strengthened his case for a major payday after emerging as one of the NBA’s better perimeter defenders and earning All-Defensive Team honors.

Wallace hasn’t shown any interest in talking about money openly. During his end-of-season talk, he emphasized that he’s focused on improving his game and helping his team instead of getting caught up in contract talks.

Pierce thinks players should stay flexible with the opportunities that come their way. He feels that since Wallace has shown he can be part of a winning team, there shouldn’t be any issue if another team offers him a bigger role and more cash.

No matter if Wallace ends up signing a long-term deal with the Thunder or looks elsewhere, his contract situation will likely top the Thunder’s stories as they head into the next leg of their run for championships.
