Wednesday’s announcement that five-time UEFA Champions League winner Casemiro had joined Lionel Messi and Co. at Inter Miami ended up being somewhat overshadowed by a statement made mere minutes later by Major League Soccer that an investigation into the Herons had been launched.
In the statement, the MLS explained that it was “reviewing a tampering allegation against Inter Miami CF. The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete.
“While Inter Miami CF and the LA Galaxy have reached a settlement for the Discovery priority to sign Casemiro, the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation.”

While Miami has yet to address the investigation, so far declining to comment after being contacted by All Out Soccer, the Galaxy did state, “The LA Galaxy and Inter Miami CF have reached a settlement for the Discovery priority to sign Casemiro, and the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation currently open with Major League Soccer.”
Since then, Casemiro, who joins after four seasons in the Premier League with Manchester United, has made his position crystal clear that it was Miami or bust as far as his MLS dreams were concerned.
“I’d like to clarify the situation - especially regarding the talk about me - by saying that I spoke with the LA Galaxy a while back, but I made it very clear to them that I wanted to play for Inter Miami,” the 34-year-old said, via online translation.
“It’s a city I love, and a place my family and children know well since we’re always here whenever we have days off. So, from the moment I spoke with the Galaxy, I made it absolutely clear that the only team I wanted to play for in MLS was Inter Miami.”
The Brazilian international, who recently started in every game during their run to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, added, “The project and the excitement of playing alongside some of the greatest players of all time - that’s a huge motivator.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Inter Miami for making the effort to bring me here; I wanted to be here, too. As I said, Inter Miami was the only place in MLS where I wanted to be. I want to express my thanks and show that on the pitch.
“I’m eager to get started and show it through my play. I’m really excited to reciprocate the affection I’ve received from everyone - the club, the owners, Jorge [Mas], [David] Beckham, and of course Leo and the other players. I just want to channel that excitement onto the field and, naturally, help my teammates.”
While unable to play in Miami’s first post-World Cup game as he continues to wait on a visa, Casemiro will have been watching on closely as his new team returned to action by collecting three points at Nu Stadium against Chicago Fire FC on Wednesday. Luis Suarez scored twice as the Herons, still led by interim boss Guillermo Hoyos, spoiled Robert Lewandowski’s day as he made his debut for the Fire.
Miami will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Canada to take on CF Montreal, before returning to Florida to host the Columbus Crew a week later.
