Sean Manaea lasted just three innings as the Mets starter tonight in the team's 10-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs. He allowed four runs, three of them earned, on six hits, striking out four batters and walking two over 86 pitches.

He was far from the only player who had a nightmarish outing in the second leg of today's doubleheader at Citi Field, the latter of two Mets losses on the day.

"Three innings is inexcusable," Manaea told the media after loss game. "I put so much pressure on the bullpen...I set the team up for failure, and I take full blame for that."

Manaea was then asked about the "psyche" of the Mets locker room right now. He gave the question some thought, and furrowed his brow.

"It's not good," he bluntly responded. "We're not playing up to our capabilities. We know we're better than this, but right now we're playing some really bad baseball."

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza refused to pin the blame on Manaea, instead pointing to the prevailing story from tonight's game, a Mets infield which committed six errors.

Mendoza began his news conference with two words, spoken in bold font:

"It's embarrassing."

When asked about Manaea's performance on the mound, he lamented that his southpaw starting pitcher "deserved better" from the "guys behind him" tonight.

"We didn't help him. We probably cost him around 20 to 30 pitches," Mendoza stated.

Francisco Lindor - who committed one error tonight in his return from injury- and Marcus Semien - who committed two errors - echoed this sentiment from their skipper in their individual interviews tonight, taking some accountability for Manaea's short-lived start.

Mendoza concluded his news conference shortly thereafter, admitting "Everybody's pissed, everybody's frustrated...in big situations, we just didn't execute...it's hard to explain."
