The assumption would have been that a No. 2 seed beats a No. 7 seed, but when it comes down to the Iowa high school state baseball tournament, it’s advised not to assume.
With the mindset of “why not us,” Davenport Assumption made it nine straight wins on Tuesday, July 21, with an 11-1 win in six innings over Carlisle (26-9). Assumption's 20th state tournament appearance now features a state semifinal berth with a chance to return to the state final for the first time since 2022.
With a 27-13 record and the No. 7 seed, Assumption has recently had a new mentality leading up to the state tournament.
“I don’t think the seed has anything to do with it,” said Assumption head coach Greg Thissen. “I think getting to the state tournament, everybody that makes it feels like they have a chance to win. I feel like it’s been us against the like two or three weeks ago. It all came together, had a couple big wins, had a couple discussions.”

The bats were loud for the Knights. Two runs in the first inning, followed by two more in the second inning, quickly made it 4-0, and all of a sudden the Wildcats had a hill to climb.
Carlisle’s Ben Lancaster singled to open the bottom of the fourth inning, giving the Wildcats some life. But the leadoff knock didn’t advance any further.
Instead, it was Assumption in the bottom of the fourth inning, increasing its lead. Charlie Mauser singled to get the inning going. Then Nolan Dittmer singled, followed by a walk from Brady Mosier.
A two-run single from Jack DiIulio brought in two more, making it 6-0 and forcing a pitching change for Carlisle, as head coach Blake Heitmeier went to lefty Greyson Johnson-Miers to replace Owen Johnson.
Johnson-Miers outing wouldn’t bring any big changes, though. Assumption added four more runs for a total of six in the inning off of five singles and a hit batter. The Knights led 10-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, with Cooper Sweeney dealing on the hill. He would eventually go 5 ⅔ innings with four hits allowed, one earned run, no walks and six strikeouts.
The Wildcats would finally break through in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly from Kaden Campbell, who brought in Roman Wyckoff to score, but that was the only run Carlisle could muster.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats didn’t hang their heads.
“It sucks to go out this way, but I have been playing this game since I was four, so I can’t really define one game between all the games that we’ve played in our life,” said senior Bret Schnoor.
Originally scheduled to play on Monday afternoon, the weather had other plans, but the mindset remained the same for the Knights. That allowed them to stay with the same focus regardless of when they were told to play.
“They were locked in all night,” Thissen said. “We could have played at 1:00 in the morning. Guys have bought into roles, and I mean once things started to tighten up, we saw guys being really good in their roles, and then accepting their roles and having a lot of energy in their roles.”
