Lomax to Green 84
Hall of Famer
Enough of this free agency talk. I have suffered through enough Rod Graves "we are going to be patient, just because we have 37 million in available cap space doesn't mean we will be irresponsible with our money" talk. The Cards are the Cards. They always profess to want to change and things always stay the same. This is the same club that will once again be in the news for "signing more draft choices faster than anyone else-rounds 4-7", but once again will be one of the last to sign its top choice. I have come to accept that.
Now, on to the draft. The Houston Texans are sitting pretty at #3, yet they really don't want anyone who warrants a top #3 selection. I just read in Pro Football Weekly that everything went extremely well between the Texans and Utah Offensive Tackle Jordan Gross, and that the Texans were enamored with the 230 pounds, 4.3 40, and 41.5 inch vertical leap that Miami wide reciever Andre Johnson displayed at the recent Miami workout. All indications are that these two are the top two targets for the Texans and all indications are that they would both still be on the board if the Texans move down say 3 spots to the #6 slot held by the Cardinals.
The Cardinals on the other hand desperately need help at Defensive End, Quarterback, and Wide Reciever. Arguably the 4 top players on the draft board are 2 quarterbacks-Palmer and Leftwich, a defensive end-Terrell Suggs, and a wide reciever-Charles Rogers. The Cardinals are making suggestions that they will be big players in free agency, yet we have seen no proof that they will really make a big splash. They desperately need a star quality player from this draft and waiting until the #6 slot may not guarantee that the Cards will get their guy.
Here are the reasons why the trade makes sense for both clubs:
1. They both benefit by getting the player that they covet. The Texans benefit by getting their guy at a more reasonably slotted space and not having to pay their guy a 10 million + signing bonus. Both Johnson and Gross will be there at #6 because neither Chicago at #4, or Dallas at #5 will take these players. The Cards avoid the risk of losing out on their top guys and can really zero in on who they want instead of worrying about if they will be there.
2. The Texans and Cards are not rivals. Houston wouldn't dare give Dallas a chance to move up a few spots. It wouldn't be right for a Houston franchise to help out a Dallas one. The Cards would not have to worry that a team like the Bears would panic and move to the 2nd slot held by Detroit because Detroit would never give Chicago what it wants since they are division rivals. The Cards would know that either Leftwich, Palmer, Rogers, or Suggs would be there when they pick.
3. The sooner the trade is made the better-If the trade could happen in the near future, then both clubs could make the necessary adjustments in free agency.
