might be a decent backup option.Reading his scouting report per forecaster-lunchpail type, plugger, hustles, lacks athletic ability, could be a hustling backup type.Sounds like he could provide solid depth if Robinson wears out and Branch continues to still be a big failure. What can it hurt? ross kolodzeij hung around for a few years. leisle is bigger and might be a decent run plugger.

Was he actually on a team last year???
He was with the Giants in camp but got injured and released. Under up in Canada. The real question is why wasn't he in the league in '07? I can't find anywhere that he was actually injured.

Two years in a row he wasnt even on an NFL team. He never even played a snap for the canadian team he was on last year.

Camp fodder personified.

At least its a deal that wont even be in the top 51 salaries thus he doesnt count against the cap.

At least we know if he starts taking snaps ahead of Branch that the 'light' is officially off.

This was his draft day info: 2004 Draft

#139 Overall Pick: Rodney Leisle
Defensive Tackle - UCLA
6-3 - 309 pounds - 5.11 40
5.11 in the 40-yard dash … Bench presses 225 pounds 31 times … 31 3/8-inch arm length … 11 1/8-inch hands
In four years at UCLA, fifth-year senior Leisle started 40 of 43 games and recorded 131 tackles with six sacks and four interceptions, three picks in his senior season. Leisle was able to neutralize double teams which allowed the other UCLA defensive linemen to get to the quarterback. He is technically sound and is a great tackler. Has good quickness and plays much bigger than his sub-300 pound weight.
Leisle had a 55-yard game-winning interception return for a touchdown in an October 11 game against Arizona.

DT Rodney Leisle
An ankle injury frustrated Leisle during his senior season and despite lingering pain, Leisle did a gutsy workout at UCLA's pro day. He suffered a broken ankle as a junior, but had surgery and returned to play the final three games of the season. It is believed he slipped a bit because of his injuries, as he was projected as a third round pick.
Leisle shows good vision and awareness, which allows him to quickly read and react to blocks. A overachieving, high-motor, intense player he rarely takes off plays and goes full-speed all game long. Not a very high upside for Leisle although he has been a consistent and durable player throughout his career.
One of the knocks on Leisle is his inability to burst through the gap and cause great penetration. Another knock on Leisle is his lack of size. Some believe that Leisle needs to improve his bulk so he can become better against the run.
Leisle, a sociology major, earned a spot on director's Honor Roll in winter 2001 with a 3.33 GPA. A native of Bakersfield, California, Leisle is a paintball enthusiast and was a basketball and football star, and with football he was a star on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
Leisle will provide depth and strength to the Saints interior defensive line. More than likely Leisle will compete for the third spot in the DT rotation with Kenny Smith and Kendrick Allen. The Saints chose Leisle shortly before LSU DT Chad Lavalais went off the board, and when asked, Saints personnel executive Rick Mueller suggested that Leisle would be a better nose tackle than Lavalais, who would be limited to the 3-technique defensive tackle. Leisle's strengths lie in run defense.
The Saints expect Leisle to be ready by mid-May following ankle surgery the month before the draft. He is not expected to be ready for the rookies-only practice camp the weekend after the draft.

5 139 RODNEY LEISLE DT- I had him 3+. 4 FOX. 12 and 24 DT. 77th overall ProFootballWeekly, 82 USA Today, and 123 TheRedZone. 6'3", 309#. Probably the strongest player in the draft. Aggressive and nasty. Good vs the run. Good base to handle double-teams. Can locate and finish. Never stops. Team player. Loves football. Average athlete. Short arms hamper shedding blocks. Useless out of the pocket. 6 sacks in 4 years. Poor Senior Bowl. Tools to be a player. Noted injury concern. Mentioned as a possible projection to DE. Won´t happen. Good pick.

A couple of points -

1. I wouldn't consider that deal done til we see it officially announced.

2. I'd be careful about underevaluing any D-lineman who played on that Giant unit.

True but he never actually played for that Giant Unit. He was camp fodder for them. He has only ever played for the Saints.

Sweet, cut branch :)

If so I can't help but think of that wasted second round draft pick (#33) used to draft Branch. Even that third round pick of Buster Davis still bothers me.

I know teams miss in the draft, but I do not like to miss in the early rounds.

The front office has done well so far, but this signing almost seems to be a shame. It will most surely cost us a comp. pick in the draft. Just doesn't seem to be worth that to me. This guy won't make the regular season any way shape or form IMO.

He was never even on a team last year plus he will only make vet minimum. He will not count as a qualifing free agent for the comp pick equation.

Sounds like a Fred Wakefield or Ross Kolejkic (sp?) clone.

sounds like a typical guy from our once Cardinal past of high motor, a lot of heart and crappy results because they lack the talent...you know, the Burke type of player

You mean the type of player that used to start on Dave Mac ballclubs? As a backup or third stringer, these signings are ok....but if he were being signed to start, then we would have problems. :D
