Cardinals could move $5.35 million outfielder to advance rebuild originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Under the new president of baseball operations, Chaim Bloom, the St. Louis Cardinals are showing all signs of a team that's trying to rebuild.
The Cardinals have already moved on from Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Brendan Donovan, and Sonny Gray in hopes of bringing to light some young prospects for the future.
There are still some veteran guys, but is St. Louis done with their trade frenzy? Could a fan favorite be the next man out of the Cardinals organization?
MLB mock trade: Cardinals deal Lars Nootbaar to a contender
St. Louis is labeled as a team that's most likely not going to compete for a World Series this season, and the organization will be patient while all eyes are set towards the future.
With this being said, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer floated the idea of the Cardinals moving outfielder Lars Nootbaar to completely clean ship.
Nootbaar, 28, has battled injuries throughout his major league career, and this will continue to be the subject of discussion while he comes back from double heel surgery to address chronic Haglund's deformities.
He's expected to miss the start of 2026, but Rymer suggested that the outfielder could find interest in a team that's looking to contend for the World Series this season.
Nootbaar is a consistent left-handed bat when healthy. Through five big league seasons, he has a career on-base percentage of .341, showing he has elite plate discipline.
Injuries will be an issue if the Cardinals try to find a trade suitor, but Nootbaar would be the final step in St. Louis cleaning house.
