Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary’s Olympic journey has come to an end. Team Slovakia placed fourth as they fell to Finland 6-1 in the Bronze Medal Game on Saturday.
Slovakia’s only goal came from Tomas Totar in the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1. Unfortunately, Finland dominated the rest of the way. Sebastian Aho, Erik Haula, Roope Hintz, Kaapo Kakko, and Joel Arnia all sealed it for the Finns.
However, Fehervary shouldn’t feel too bad about the Winter Olympics. The Slovaks exceeded expectations by winning their group and advancing to the Bronze Medal Game.
Slovakia finished in the final four along with Finland, Canada, and the USA. However, the Slovaks were the only team to include non-NHL players in the lineup.
On Saturday, Fehervary played 17:43 of ice time, recording an assist and two shots on goal. The 26-year-old blueliner was solid as he finished the tournament with four points–all assists–in six games. He also averaged an impressive 21:01 of ice time per game to rank second for Slovakia.
More importantly, Fehervary made some history with his four assists. He tied Lubomir Sekeras (1998) for the most by a Slovakian defenseman in an Olympics involving NHL players.
Meanwhile, Fehervary’s Capitals teammates Tom Wilson and Logan Thompson have a chance to finish with either gold or silver. Team Canada will face USA in the Gold Medal Game on Sunday.
