CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Wareham beats Yarmouth-Dennis in battle of division leaders

The Wareham Gatemen (West Division) played the Yarmouth-Dennis Red (East Division) Sox Monday in a game between the leaders of their respective divisions.

It tuns out, the West leaders had just a bit more.

Wareham (15-14) earned a 6-5 win over Yarmouth-Dennis (15-12-2) in eight innings as the Red Sox dropped to second place in the East.

The Gatemen scored in the top of the first inning when Chris McHugh (North Carolina State) doubled in Colby Turner (Michigan).

Wareham struck again with two home runs in the top of the third inning. McHugh hit his fifth home run of the summer, this time to left center, bringing in Turner for the Gatemen. Then, Hayden Yost (Florida) homered to right center for his second long ball of the summer, also scoring Vance Sheahan (South Carolina-Upstate).

The Gatemen scored in the top of the fifth inning when Caden McDonald (Florida) doubled to score McHugh.

Yarmouth-Dennis scored its first runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Jack Arcamone (Richmond) singled home A.J. Nessler (Pittsburgh) and Garrett Wright (Bowling Green State). The Red Sox scored two more when Chris Hacopian (Maryland) doubled to plate Brayden Dowd (Southern California) and Arcamone.

The Red Sox scored in the sixth inning when Will Gasparino (Texas) scored on a fielder's choice.

In other Cape Cod Baseball League action:

Chatham Anglers 6, Cotuit Kettleers 4​


The Anglers (13-13-3) scored five runs in the last three innings of play to beat the Kettleers (11-16-2).

Chatham scored the game's first run in the top of the third inning. Daniel Jackson (Georgia) scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashton Larson (Louisiana State).

Chatham scored again in the top of the sixth inning, as Jake Hanley (Indiana) singled in Isaiah Lane (San Diego).

The Anglers took the lead again in the top of the seventh when Larson had a two-run base hit to plate Chase Fralick (Auburn) and Roman Martin (UCLA).

Chatham had another two runs across in the top of the eighth inning, as Jackson scored on an error, and Fralick scored on a sacrifice fly.

Cotuit scored in the bottom of the third inning when Zan Von Schlegell (St. Thomas) doubled home Camden Johnson (Wichita State).

The Kettleers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. A Ryne Farber (Texas State) sacrifice bunt scored Johnson. Farber then advanced and scored on a groundout.

Jack Natili (Cincinnati) scored in the eighth inning on a wild pitch, but the Kettleers could get no closer.

Brewster Whitecaps 4, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 2​


The Whitecaps (16-12-1) broke a tie in the seventh inning to hold off the Harbor Hawks (12-14-3).

Brewster pitcher Mavrick RIzy (Louisiana State) struck out four batters in two innings to improve to 2-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Brewster scored first when Carson Tinney (Notre Dame) doubled to score Collin Priest (Clemson).

Brewster took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Priest scored on a fielding error.

Brewster scored two more in the bottom of the seventh inning to account for the final margin, as Colton Coates (Louisiana Tech) scored on a sacrifice fly, and Brendan Lawson (Florida) singled to plate Scott Newman (South Carolina-Upstate).

Hyannis had a run across in the top of the fourth inning when Myles Davis (State College of Florida) singled in Jeff Lougee (Duke).

The Harbor Hawks tied it in the top of the seventh inning when Sawyer Black (North Carolina) doubled in Owen Prince (VMI).
