Cannes 3-3 Roma: Dybala impressive, but Wesley red card ruins friendly lead

Roma had been dominating their pre-season friendly with Cannes and leading 3-0 with Donyell Malen and a Paulo Dybala brace, but Wesley’s red card opened the door for a 3-3 comeback.

The first outside test of the summer for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side saw them cross over to France for a match against Cannes, who are also owned by the Friedkin family.

Injured Niccolò Pisilli missed out, with Manu Koné and Neil El Aynaoui still on vacation after the 2026 World Cup, but it was otherwise a strong starting XI.

Dybala gave Roma the lead with a magnificent free kick into the top corner, followed nine minutes later by his assist for Malen.

Wesley managed the extraordinary feat of getting two yellow cards before half-time in a pre-season friendly, reducing the Giallorossi to 10 men.

Nonetheless, Dybala still managed to expand their lead to 3-0 after the break when running onto a Devyne Rensch through ball.

Cannes began to push hard and the 10 men of Roma struggled to keep afloat, conceding to a ferocious Julien Lopez volley into the roof of the net.

The Italian defence was caught napping late on for another Lopez goal, then Brice Oggad converted a last-gasp penalty for the Artem Dovbyk foul, for the final 3-3 result.

Their next match is in Wales on August 1 against Cardiff City.
