In signing a multi-fight deal, Canelo Alvarez was in discussions with Jake Paul in Saudi Arabia instead of William Scull ahead of the super middleweight championship on May 3.
Currently, Canelo is fully preparing for his upcoming defence of the WBO, WBA, and WBC super-middleweight titles against IBF champion William Scull, who competes in the same division. Although Canelo was not interested in fighting Scull, who had previously vacated the IBF title during an undisputed contest, he is moving forward with the match.
Canelo Alvarez, 34, with a record of 62-2-2 and 39 KOs, is completely focused on Scull. Since Erislandy Lara in 2014, in a tough fight, Scull will be Canelo's first fight with an opponent from Cuba, outside of North America.
The American YouTube star Paul Jake reacted negatively and sharply criticised Canelo for dodging the fight, calling him a more astute businessman than a genuine boxer.
Canelo will defend his title against Scull in the ring on Saturday, May 3, in Saudi Arabia. Known for his unique styles, Canelo focuses more on physically wearing down the opponent and less on knockout power, whereas Scull maintains distance and focuses on exhausting the rival.
Explosive power and tactical control will be Canelo's key victory skills to counter Scull's endurance approach. Breaking through Scull's defenses will be crucial for Canelo to make a dominant statement in his Middle East debut.
The loss to Canelo against Bivol was immense, and it remains the only hitch in his career that inflicted a lasting injury on his pride. However, Canelo is committed to proving himself in a rematch. Viewing the loss against Bivol as an opportunity to learn, Canelo maintains a growth-oriented mindset.
Winning the IBF title, the Cuban opponent seized advantage of the opportunity and joined the WBC and WBO titles that Canelo still holds. The opportunity motivated Canelo to a forceful confrontation with personal revenge.
Much of the boxing world's attention has already turned to Canelo vs. Crawford, and predictions are pouring in, despite the immediate challenge posed by Scull. Canelo will need to evaluate his steps going forward in his aspirations to further solidify his tenancy as one of the all-time great boxers after facing Scull.
The boxing champion continues to show reason why he must be the world's best pound-for-pound fighter, despite frequent criticism about his career choices.
