Carey Price has seen enough from Montreal Canadiens’ young goaltending duo to believe the team has reason for optimism.
The Canadiens legend praised Jakub Dobes (25) and Jacob Fowler (21) while discussing their early success and development in the NHL. Price said both goalies have shown the confidence needed to handle pressure in Montreal.
“I’m excited for those guys, seeing them experience success early,” Price said. “It’s an exciting time in their careers.”
He then said, “They’re both young players. I remember what it was like to be that age and find success. That’s a confidence-builder, not just for the goalies but for the team. They both seem to be confident in their abilities, and that’s a good thing.”

Dobes and Fowler helped Montreal post a 48-24-10 record and reach the Eastern Conference Final during the 2025-26 season. Dobes emerged as the primary starter, while Fowler provided a strong option behind him.
Dobes went 29-10-4 with a .901 save percentage across 43 regular-season games. Fowler posted a 9-6-2 record and .908 save percentage in 17 appearances.
Dobes also won two Game 7s, one against Tampa Bay and another against the Buffalo Sabres, while Fowler made 36 saves in his NHL debut against Pittsburgh.

Price sees clear differences between the two goalies, but believes their mentality gives them a strong foundation.
“They’re a little bit different,” Price said. “I really love Dobes’ compete level, he’s got that ‘grrr’ in his game, he’s got that swagger.”
Price continued, saying, “Fowler kind of reminds me more of myself, a little more reserved. He plays a very quiet game like I did.”
That contrast could benefit Montreal as the Canadiens build around a young core. Dobes brings an aggressive edge, while Fowler’s calm approach gives the team another reliable option.

Price, who played his entire 15-year career with Montreal, understands the pressure surrounding the position. His assessment carries added weight as the Canadiens enter another season with greater expectations.
“It sure feels that they’re a contender,” Price said, while adding that “a lot of things need to go right” for Montreal to win the Stanley Cup.
