Canada's Steven Dubois ruined Jens van 't Wout's party as he claimed short track speed skating gold in the men's 500 metres at the Milan/Cortina Winter Games on Wednesday.

Dutchman Van 't Wout was aiming to become the first speed skater to win three individual short track golds at the same Olympics, following his 1,000m and 1,500m victories.

But Dubois, who didn't have a quick start, built his lead with a strong performance to cross the finish line in 40.835 seconds.

Melle van 't Wout took silver ahead of his younger brother Jens.

Reigning champion Liu Shaoang of China was eliminated in the semi-finals.
