Can Munetaka Murakami hit 60 homers? White Sox star has real chance to make history originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Chicago White Sox made the best roster move of the entire MLB offseason when they signed Munetaka Murakami to a two-year, $34 million contract.
While scouts and teams were concerned about his offensive upside in the Majors, they were immediately proven wrong with Murakami slugging multiple homers right out of the gate this season.
So far, through 37 games, Murakami has a remarkable 14 home runs on the season. That's an impressive feat, as it's only behind Aaron Judge for most homers this season. Now the question becomes, can Murakami hit 60 homers this season?
Can Munetaka Murakami hit 60 homers this season?
CBS Sports Matt Snyder posed the same question, and while saying "I'm inclined to say it won't happen," he isn't completely shutting down the possibility of Judge reaching 60 this season.
Judge has 15 homers this season, and is on pace for 66 in 2026. He's hit 60+ before, so it wouldn't be that far of a stretch to believe he could reach that total.
But, Snyder notes that anyone other than Judge hitting 60 homers would "shock me." That includes Murakami.
The White Sox slugger does actually have a chance, as he's currently on pace to hit 61 homers this season with his 14 home runs through 37 games for the White Sox.

His power has been one of the more exciting storylines of the season, and he has a very real chance to reach 60 homers if he can stay hot for the rest of the season.
Murakami could break a ton of records if he reached 60 homers in his first season in the Major Leagues, and while there's still a lot that needs to go right, Murakami is on track to reach that 60-homer mark this year.
So, can Murakami hit 60 homers this season? The answer is yes, as he's currently on track to reach this mark. It won't be easy, but the power he's shown is more than enough reason to believe he has a real chance to reach this ridiculous HR feat.
