OKLAHOMA CITY — Mississippi State softball is playing in the Women's College World Series for the very first time.
The Bulldogs are facing No. 11 seed Texas Tech at Devon Park on May 28 (11 a.m. CT, ESPN). They will play No. 2 seed Texas or No. 7 seed Tennessee in its second game.
Ringing cowbells is a tradition for Mississippi State sports fans that dates back to the 1930s and 1940s. Here's what to know about whether fans will be permitted to bring them to the WCWS.
Fans will not be allowed to enter Devon Park with cowbells, according to the NCAA. Although cowbells are not explicitly mentioned on the WCWS' list of prohibited items, they fall under the category of "alarming noisemakers" that is included on the list.
According to Mississippi State, the tradition stems from an incident in which a jersey cow once wandered onto the field during a football game in the Egg Bowl between Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
MSU won the game, and fans saw the cow as good luck. Students began to bring cows to the games, but that tradition was discontinued and replaced with cowbells.
