DALLAS - In the case of Klay Thompson, the Dallas Mavs get some credit for trying.
He was brought here to supplement the brilliant work of Luka Doncic ... but it didn't work.
And now? There is some buzz that Luka's Los Angeles Lakers might wish to visit the idea of a reunion with Thompson.
The Mavs' best move on the heels of that news?
Create a bidding war.
OK, a mini-bidding war.
The Lakers and the Houston Rockets might be interested in adding a shooter. For a trade of any sort, it obviously takes two to tango.
But to really get anything for Klay? "Three to tango'' would be preferable.
We will argue that Thompson, even at 36, could help the right team in the right spot. Last year, he averaged 11.7 points per game while shooting 38.3 percent from three - and he did it without an elite set-up man. (That man once upon a time was Doncic before the absurd trade that sent him to LA.)
Thompson is entering the final year of his contract, worth $17.46 million. There can be value there as a player and then later, there can be value as an expiring contract.
So, NBA, come and get him!
The Lakers and LeBron James probably need to figure out their future together before any big move is made. And in Houston? Keeping Kevin Durant happy is Job 1, so maybe a reunion with an ol' Splash Brother will require his positive vote.
Would the Mavs have to pick up some of the financial tab here?
There seems little reason for Dallas to retain him as the Cooper Flagg-focused rebuild under new head coach Dusty May is underway.
It's too bad it didn't work out here for Thompson. But this isn't the end of the road. There might be a little more gas in the tank for the future Hall of Famer ... and all the Mavs have to do is set up a couple of competitive paths to get something out of all of this.
