Kiley Hinton was a difference maker on the softball diamnod throughout her prolific prep career at Penn High School.
She continues to be a difference maker now for the Austin Peay University softball program.
Hinton, a sophomore infielder for the Governors, was recently named as the Female Breakout Player of the Year for the softball program.
Hinton has started 47 of 48 games this spring for the school in Clarksville, Tennessee. She is batting .323 with 12 doubles to go with seven home runs. Hinton has 27 RBIs and 25 runs scored with an on base percentage of .371 and a slugging percentage of .577.
Hinton, who is playing second base, was the star shortstop for the Penn team in 2023 that won the Class 4A state title under coach Beth Zachary. Hinton hit .421 that season with nine homers to go with 38 RBIs and 39 runs scored. She was a member of the North All-Star team.
Hinton made 29 starts as a freshman at Austin Peay in 2024.
Austin Peay is 35-13 overall and 12-9 in Atlantic Sun Conference action. The team will play in the ASUN Tournament May 6-10 in Oxford, Alabama.
The IUSB softball program has plenty of local flavor on the roster for first-year coach Annie Dehnke.
The Titans team includes a trio of sophomores in Savannah Hamilton (Saint Joseph), Alexis Riem (Penn) and Leah Dawson (Mishawaka). Senior Jazmen Watts (Riley) is also a member of the squad. Watts was a key member of the IUSB women's basketball team.
Hamilton, who helped St. Joe win a Class 3A state title in 2022, is a pitcher for the Titans. She is 1-6 in the circle with 36 strikeouts and 16 walks in 50 innings of work. She is also batting .234 with one double and six RBIs.
Dawson has made 35 starts this season as a third baseman. She has two doubles, one homer and 12 RBIs and is batting .186.
Riem, an outfielder, is batting .190 and has made 17 starts.
Mikaela Schramski, a former pitcher at Penn, is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Titans.
IUSB is 13-28 overall and 7-9 in CCAC (Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) play this season.
Riley Zache got to be part of a little bit of Oklahoma softballl history Sunday.
Zache, the former star catcher/shortstop for Saint Joseph's, was in the dugout as the Sooners drew a record home crowd. A record of 4,609 fans showed up at Love's Field in Norman to watch the No. 4 Sooners play No. 3 Texas for a wild 9-8 win in an SEC clash. The three-game series, which saw the Sooners sweep the Longhorns, drew a total of 13,734 fans.
Zache, who helped the Huskies win the Class 3A state crown in 2022, has appeared in eight games this season for the Sooners, who have won the last four College World Series titles. She has three at bats and collected her first career hit on April 3 versus St. Thomas. She has scored three runs, being used primarily as a pinch runner.
Zache's younger sister Berkley has signed to play for Oklahoma next season. The star pitcher is missing her senior season this spring at Saint Joseph's due to a back injury.
Oklahoma, which owns eight total national titles, is 42-5 overall and 16-5 in SEC play.
The Sooners will play in the SEC Tournament May 6-10 in Athens, Georgia.

The sophomore infielder drove in the game-winning run in a 7-6 conference victory over Kent State on Sunday.
Tighe is batting .279 with six doubles and one home run for the Broncos. She also has 10 RBIs to go with 13 runs scored.
WMU is 13-34 overall and 7-15 in the Mid-American Conference.
A pair of former Penn High School softball standouts are in their freshman seasons at Indiana State and Purdue Fort Wayne.
Abby Widmar is an infielder/outfielder for the Sycamores. She is batting .246 with two home runs and 12 RBIs for her team, which is 18-30 overall and 12-10 in conference play.
Aubrey Zachary is a pitcher for PFW, the school where her mother Beth played softball and father Dave played baseball. Zachary is 1-7 with an 8.56 ERA with 13 strikeouts and 22 walks in 34.1 innings of work.
Widmar and Zachary helped lead Penn to the Class 4A state title in 2023 and to the semi-state title game in 2024. Widmar was a power hitting first baseman for the Kingsmen. Zachary went 33-13 in her prep pitching career with four no hitters.
