Cameroon 2-1 South Africa: Kofane sends Indomitable Lions to quarter-finals, enters AFCON record books
South Africa fell 2-1 to Cameroon in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 at Agdal Medina Stadium on Sunday evening.
Bafana Bafana started on the front, creating chances but were not clinical.
Lyle Foster missed a good goalscoring opportunity inside the second minute, heading wide from Oswin Appollis’ pinpoint cross.
Relebohile Mofokeng also failed to hit the target, receiving a pass from Appollis inside the penalty area, only to miss the target.
The missed chances came back to haunt South Africa as Cameroon opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Junior Tchamadeu, who put the ball home at the back post.
South Africa could not pull one back before the break, allowing the Indomitable Lions to maintain their one-goal advantage.
Five minutes after the restart, Christian Kofane doubled Cameroon’s lead with a well-placed header from Aboubakar Nagida’s cross.
Kofane has now become the second player to score at least two goals in a single edition of AFCON before the age of 20, matching the feat of former Nigeria forward Julius Aghahowa.
Despite going two goals down, South Africa continued to show attacking intent and nearly halved deficit when Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick was kept out by Devis Epassy.
Two minutes from time, Evidence Makgopa reduced South Africa’s deficit, but Cameroon held on to claim a 2-1 victory.
The five-time champions will now face Morocco in the quarter-finals, after the hosts defeated Tanzania 1-0 in their round-of-16 tie.
