Cam Ward's favorite play is schoolyard simple.

One of the first things Ward told coach Brian Callahan after the Tennessee Titans made him the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft was about the Titans needing to add "switch verts" into the playbook. That shouldn't be a tough ask. Switch verts is, essentially, a play where four receivers run straight down the field toward the end zone. The only twist to it is the inside and outside receivers criss-cross at the beginning of their routes, forcing defensive backs in man-to-man to switch their coverages.

"We're not window shopping," Ward joked when asked about the play at his introductory press conference, smiling about his preference toward taking shots downfield.

ESTES: Cam Ward will need patience, and Tennessee Titans haven't done that well

Ward threw his fair share of deep shots in college. Last year at Miami he tied for the national lead in completions that gained 20 or more yards with 74. On passes targeted 20 or more yards downfield, Ward threw 14 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Now Ward joins a roster with No. 1 receiver Calvin Ridley, one of the NFL's most renowned deep threats, and a coach in Brian Callahan who helped mastermind the Joe Burrow to Ja'Marr Chase deep threat connection that's been borderline unstoppable in Cincinnati for four years.

Callahan's past isn't lost on Ward.

"I just think a lot of the stuff translates over from what I did at Miami," Ward said. "Even at Wazzu. It’s a quarterback friendly offense. You see what he did with Joe Burrow his rookie year. Cally has one of the best offensive minds out there. For me, it’s a blessing for someone like him to believe in me and put the ball in my hands at the end of the game to go win it. As a quarterback that’s all you can ask for."
