Cam Newton stirred a hornet’s nest when he decided to interview Stephen A. Smith’s sworn enemy and former ESPN colleague, writer Jason Whitlock.

The Whitlock and Smith rivalry went to another level when he made an appearance on Newton’s podcast 4th &1, which set off alarms among Newton’s ESPN colleagues.

Well, now, Newton is trying to defend his decision to have Whitlock on his show.

He admitted he knew what bringing Whitlock to show meant and really made no apologies for it.

“Some would say, ‘Isn’t your relationship with Stephen A. Smith more beneficial or advantageous for you to not even render the opposition of Jason Whitlock the platform?” Newton said. “No. Because at the end of the day, I’ve gotta do what’s best for the platform. Nobody seen that coming. That’s why I did it.”

He also offered Stephen A., whose show “First Take” he appears on during the football season, a chance to clear his name and to clear up this mess.

“I’m going to always give a person, an individual, just like Stephen A. Smith, you’re more than welcome to come up on this platform and speak your truth,” he said. “I render the same kind of sentiment [to everyone].”

Both Newton and the producer of his podcast tried to explain their stance on this, but it will be interesting to see how Stephen A. responds.
