Veteran girls basketball coach Kevin Furtado is taking over the program at Calvary Day, replacing Landon Sarazine, who led the Cav program for one season.
Furtado, who graduated from the University of Georgia, started coaching in 1990 and has a career record of 507-323. He joins the Cavs, who struggled last season with a 4-21 record, after coaching at Effingham County for one year. The Rebels went 6-18 this year after winning just two games the year before.
"This is my 36th year coaching and most years I've come in to take over teams that have been down," said Furtado, who has coached 12 teams in his head coaching career. "I like the rebuilding process and I know the strong tradition of the girls basketball program at Calvary Day. When I was offered the job, I just couldn't turn it down.
"I was able to retire from the public school system and I think Calvary Day is the perfect spot for me to land."
Furtado has led three teams to the Final Four in GIAA playoffs and had a strong run at Lake Oconee Academy from 2016-21. He started the program from scratch there and led the Titans to a pair of Elite Eight appearances in the GHSA playoffs in the 2019-20 season and the 2020-21 season, when the team finished with a 25-1 record competing in the Class A Public enrollment classification.
He followed with stints at Walnut Grove and Commerce High School, where he turned around those teams, before taking the job at Effingham County last year.
"I think we can get Calvary Day back to being an elite program," Furtado said. "I like to run a lot of camps and work with the younger teams to build the program from the ground up. We'll work on developing talented players in a program that has a strong vision and plays with a purpose."
Jackie Hamilton stepped down as the head coach at Calvary Day after 18 seasons at the helm following the 2023 season. He won 427 games in his career and led the Cavs to the 2008 Class A state title and led the Cavs to four Final Four appearances. Daniel Jackson, a longtime assistant under Hamilton, took over and led the Cavs on a run to the Sweet 16 and then to an Elite Eight appearance in the playoffs before moving on to take the job at St. Andrew's this year.
Savannah Country Day recently announced that Hornet girls basketball coach Joe Nero was stepping down after two seasons and will be replaced by Fallon Page, who takes over as the interim Program Director and the Head Girls Varsity Coach.
Nero led the Hornets to the Sweet 16 of the state playoffs the last two seasons, posting a record of 39-17. He will leave SCD at the end of the school year to return to his previous school — Woodberry Forest in Virginia.
Page has been working at SCD as the school's Athletics Coordinator. She was the head coach at St. Vincent's from 2021-2025.
A former standout at Maryville University, a Division II program in Missouri, where she earned Academic All-Conference honors four times, Page was an assistant coach at the college level at Armstrong State, Limestone College, Vassar College and at Oglethorpe University, where she also served as the program's head coach for one season.
Savannah Country Day will make the transition from playing in the GHSA to competing in the Georgia Independent Athletic Association in the fall.
