Caleb Wilson Comments on Darryn Peterson as Both Rookies Navigate NBA Summer League
Former North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson made headlines this week with comments about his desire to remain on the court during NBA Summer League, as several of the top picks in the 2026 NBA Draft have begun sitting out games.
Wilson and the Chicago Bulls were scheduled to face Darryn Peterson and the Utah Jazz on Monday, but the anticipated matchup did not happen after Utah held Peterson out of the contest. Peterson, the No. 2 overall pick and a former Kansas guard, could be finished for the remainder of Summer League.
Wilson addressed his approach to Summer League while also discussing other members of his draft class.
"I feel like I'm different than all of them," Wilson said. "Not to say they don't, but I enjoy basketball. I love this sh*t. I'm going to play as much as I can."
The comments came as both Peterson and No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa have reportedly been held out of Summer League action. NBA teams frequently limit the participation of highly drafted players during the exhibition schedule as they evaluate their rosters and prepare for the regular season.
Peterson's availability was a recurring storyline during his lone season at Kansas. The guard missed significant time and dealt with cramping issues, which he later attributed to creatine use. Despite the interruptions, Peterson averaged 20.2 points per game before Utah selected him second overall in June's NBA Draft.
The former Jayhawk has since provided glimpses of his potential during Summer League. Peterson scored at least 20 points in each of his four appearances, including a 28-point performance in his debut against Atlanta and a 25-point, 12-assist outing against Memphis.
Peterson also averaged 5.5 assists during his Summer League appearances, a notable increase from the 1.6 assists he averaged at Kansas.
While Wilson's comments generated attention because of the circumstances surrounding Peterson and Dybantsa, the three rookies now turn their attention toward preparing for their first NBA regular seasons.
